Big Thompson Team Recognized for Environmental Excellence
February 1, 2018
The U.S. 34 Permanent Repairs project through the Big Thompson Canyon in Colorado received an Environmental Excellence Award from the Colorado Contractors Association (CCA). The award is given to projects that exceed environmental requirements or exhibit innovative environmental controls or solutions. The project team faced many environmental challenges; U.S. 34 runs adjacent to the Big Thompson River and through the Arapahoe Roosevelt National Forest and the Pawnee National Grassland.
The team collaborated with numerous stakeholders, used innovative dewatering techniques to protect water quality and wildlife, and adhered to strict water quality monitoring. They also found a way to reuse 143,000 cubic yards of rock and 400 trees.
Environmental managers for the Big Thompson project accepted the team’s award at a CCA safety awards breakfast.
