University of Nebraska at Omaha, Baxter Arena

Omaha, Nebraska

The UNO Baxter Arena is a 219,249 SF dedicated hockey facility with two ice sheets (each 200’ by 85’), locker rooms, strength training rooms, 17 premium suites, a press box, and a concourse from which all patrons in line for concessions still have view of the arena floor. It can host 7,500 spectators for hockey or 8,000 for basketball and volleyball.

In addition to the UNO Mavericks varsity practices and games, UNO has committed a minimum 33% of the available ice time for community use and offers public skating, hockey leagues, figure skating, and campus recreation space.

The UNO Baxter Arena project presented several unique challenges and construction aspects for the Kiewit Team. The deadline to complete the facility before the 2015-16 UNO men’s hockey season allowed for only eighteen months to complete the building design; demolish existing site buildings; construct the arena, access roads, and parking lots; and finally, train the owner to operate the building.

Kiewit delivered the UNO Baxter Arena under budget and on time.
