At Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, the 32,000-square-foot Bill and Berniece Grewcock Animal Hospital supports routine, specialty and critical care for more than 39,000 animals representing hundreds of species.
The hospital brings together spaces for intensive care, treatment, surgery, dentistry, laboratory work, pharmacy services and animal diet preparation. It also features an endoscopy unit, plus the zoo’s first CT scanner, expanding the team’s ability to diagnose and treat animals on-site.
The facility also includes specialized spaces designed for different species, with cold rooms and built-in water features that support penguins, puffins and other cold-adapted animals. The space was built with floodable, graded flooring for otters, ducks and other aquatic species. In addition, the building includes a visitor viewing area that overlooks two treatment rooms, a surgery suite and a CT room, which features a custom curtain wall system with lead-lined glass.
