NASA Johnson Space Center Medicine Clinic

Houston, Texas

NASA Johnson Space Center awarded their first ever Design-Build project to the Kiewit and Perkins+Will team with a contract to renovate Building 45 into a state-of-the-art space center medicine clinic. The new 15,000 SF clinic includes office, exam, optometry, radiology and laboratory spaces. It also features pedestrian friendly walkways, natural daylighting, and patio areas.

As the Design-Build contractor, Kiewit expertly executed on all aspects of the preconstruction effort. From management of the early programming with key stakeholders, through the SD, DD, and IFC document development, Kiewit kept the delivery of a state-of-the-art facility within the owner’s cost at the forefront of their goals. Early constructability planning to assist in adapting the existing facility was critical to ensure current construction techniques were utilized in a cost-efficient manner.

This successful project was awarded LEED Gold status by the USGBC. Several of the sustainable features of the new clinic include: a subsurface stormwater detention system that slows and temporarily holds stormwater runoff so that it can be released into the environment at a controlled rate, and a new clinic parking lot to be constructed above this system.

From early planning in preconstruction to flawless execution in the field, this healthcare renovation was a successful healthcare clinic on the NASA campus.
