MoDOT 554 Bridges

Lees Summit, Missouri

This $502 million project is part of the Safe and Sound Bridge Improvement Program to rehabilitate or replace 802 of the worst conditioned bridges throughout the State of Missouri. The project team, led by Kiewit, was responsible for the removal and replacement of 554 bridges, including 43 built by Clarkson Construction Company. The Safe and Sound Project was monumental in becoming the nation’s first design-build project that delivered a system-wide improvement. Every county in the state had at least one bridge replacement and varied from remote, rural areas to sprawling urban cities – crossing streams, rivers, other raodways or railroads and averaged 28′ wide and 128′ long.

The project was awarded in June of 2009 and was substantially completed in November 2012, nearly two years before the contractual completion date of October 2014. All punchlist items and final project deliverables were completed by December of 2012 which marked the final completion of all project bridges. The team’s proactive approach and coordination efforts with all stakeholders resulted in the completion of 554 bridges throughout the state in less than three years.
