Agnes Kalaniho’okaha Cope Community Learning Center

Nanakuli, O’ahu, Hawaii

The Agnes Cope Community Learning Center is about honoring and celebrating the legacy of Agnes Kalaniho’okaha’s unique vision for the future focusing on culture, ‘āina based learning, wellness, and education.

The building’s orientation on the site takes full advantage of the stunning views of Pu’u Heleakala, and provides an exclusive and private outdoor learning area behind the building. Upon arrival, walking into the lobby leads visitors beside whale sculptures, welcoming both returning residents as well as new visitors. The open lobby area invites a direct view of the pavilion and the mountain backdrop, where one can learn about the history of Nānākuli, and admire the artwork of the community. The building’s multipurpose rooms are creatively designed to inspire both learners and tutors. All three rooms boast tall glass sliders creating seamless transitions from inside to the outside. Once outside visitors are welcomed by a large covered lanai overlooking the herb garden, stage, play area, Imu, and pavilion.

The Cope Learning Center is designed to actively engage students, and promote continued education within the community.
