30 Crossing
Little Rock, Arkansas
Kiewit led the joint venture to reconstruct I-30 over the Arkansas River, which included demolishing the old river bridge and building a new structure to double its capacity.
The 30 Crossing project, ARDOT’s first design-build effort, was designed to improve congestion and access to downtown Little Rock and North Little Rock, one of Arkansas’ most congested highways. The project scope included reconstruction of I-30 through downtown Little Rock from the I-630 through I-40 interchanges and constructing two bridges supporting 12 traffic lanes over the Arkansas River to support 120,000 vehicles per day.
Innovations included Arkansas’s first integral post-tensioned straddle bents, ultra-lightweight foam glass backfill and FRP drain systems.
A nine-month optimization and refinement period aligned scope with funding and the project reached substantial completion seven months early.
