University of Maryland NextGen Energy Program

Maryland Energy Impact Partners (MEIP), which includes Kiewit Development, Plenary Americas, Kiewit Power Constructors and Honeywell, is partnering with the University of Maryland to deliver the NextGen Energy Program. This program will upgrade and modernize portions of the campus energy systems, providing decades of efficient and sustainable energy. The NextGen Program represents a significant upfront investment which is anticipated to significantly improve energy service on campus and lead to immediate environmental benefits. As part of the improvements funded by MEIP, a Decarbonization Strategy Development Plan will be developed. This plan will identify recommendations to replace aging infrastructure in alignment with the university’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2035. Construction commenced in the summer of 2024, with an estimated completion in the spring of 2027. Campuswide energy systems operations and maintenance commenced January 2025.
