Kiewit Nuclear Solutions Co. President Mike Rinehart shares his perspective on what it will take to successfully deliver the next generation of nuclear projects.

The momentum behind nuclear continues to build as utilities, developers and government agencies work to meet rising energy demand. At the same time, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is continuing efforts to modernize its nuclear strategic security infrastructure.

Mike Rinehart, president of Kiewit Nuclear Solutions Co., recently spoke with Construction Dive about the opportunities and challenges shaping the nuclear construction market today.

Workforce planning and supply chain constraints are among the challenges Rinehart discussed facing nuclear projects in the years ahead. But one of the most significant, he said, is the ability to bring engineering, procurement and construction together across increasingly complex project teams to properly quantify and manage risk.

“The construction challenges of most of these nuclear projects are more rooted in the organization of the overall program, being able to follow what we call the EPC playbook on execution,” Rinehart told Construction Dive.

As the nuclear market continues its shift from planning to execution, that integration will be crucial to delivering projects with greater cost and schedule certainty.
