Shoreline Storage Project
The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District contracted a joint venture of Kiewit Infrastructure Co. and McNally Construction Inc., a tunneling contractor and Kiewit subsidiary, to deliver the three-mile Shoreline Storage Tunnel. Using the 385-foot-long TBM, the team advanced more than 14,000 feet of 23-foot diameter tunnel.
Rondout West Branch Bypass Tunnel
Kiewit and our joint venture partner completed a 2.5-mile hard rock tunnel beneath the Hudson River — the largest repair in the 175-year history of New York City’s water supply system. The bypass tunnel replaced a leaking section of the Rondout West Branch Tunnel, part of the Delaware Aqueduct, which supplies over 50 percent of NYC’s drinking water. Excavated at depths over 900 feet using a hard rock TBM, the tunnel passed through high-pressure zones with up to 300 psi groundwater.
WMATA L-Line Steel Tunnel Liner Rehabilitation
Kiewit led this critical project to update the subway infrastructure along the Yellow Line from East Potomac Park to L’Enfant Plaza in Washington, D.C. Rehabilitation work occurred in steel-lined and concrete portions of two parallel tunnels — inbound and outbound. The scope included tunnel leak mitigation grouting, repairing tunnel steel liner and steel-to-concrete interfaces, utilities, communication, lighting and emergency services, installing a tunnel liner cathodic protection system, new traction power third rail, installing new vent shaft fans, repairing tunnel and portal concrete cracks and replacing the fire standpipe in the tunnel.
