The Abitibi Canyon Dam Resurfacing project repaired and resurfaced the downstream face of the dam’s west-side gravity section at Ontario Power Generation Inc.’s Abitibi Canyon Generating Station on the Abitibi River in northeastern Ontario. The work addressed deteriorated concrete while maintaining safety and access constraints at an operating hydroelectric facility.
Ontario Power Generation Inc. contracted Peter Kiewit Sons ULC to construct the work in a remote setting where access to the dam face required purpose-built systems and careful sequencing.
Work included:
- Installation of access systems to support demolition and resurfacing activities
- Demolition of existing concrete and preparation of the existing structure
- Drilling and grouting of dowels and placement of reinforcing steel
- Placement of new shotcrete to form an eight-inch-thick resurfacing wall
- Installation of a new guardrail and construction of a safety shelter
Key quantities included 16 cubic meters of overhang demolition, 6,932 dowels drilled and grouted and 243 cubic meters of shotcrete placement.
The project included a 5% Indigenous participation goal. The team awarded $1,458,000 to Indigenous businesses and joint-venture partners across scaffolding, demolition, shotcrete and dowel installation, achieving approximately 11% participation.
The team achieved substantial completion 103 days ahead of the contractual date.
