PRE-ENGINEERING & ENGINEERING DESIGN

As an NQA-1, ASME Section III and N-Stamp quality provider, our team delivers value by performing detailed design for system structures and components (SSCs), including balance-of-plant (BOP) systems and nuclear steam supply system (NSSS) islands. NQA-1 CONSTRUCTION

As one of North America’s largest direct-hire contractors, we self-perform the vast majority of our work, controlling resource availability to produce schedule, safety and quality advantages. Our nuclear-grade quality program prioritizes intentional staffing and a nuclear qualifications training curriculum. Coupled with disciplined supervision and construction purview of a safety-conscious work environment (SCWE), we promote the industrial and nuclear safety protection of all personnel.

PROCUREMENT/COMMERCIAL-GRADE DEDICATION (CGD)

We leverage an $8-billion annual spend over a large network of qualified vendors, enabling our team to mitigate impacts of supply chain issues. Periodic quality audits of our approved vendor list maintain our standard of quality requirements. For components that are not manufactured under NQA-1 standards, our team develops a commercial-grade dedication (CGD) plan, testing critical characteristics of a component to withstand an event and still perform its intended function.

Integrated Nuclear Solutions

Early contractor involvement (ECI) is a project development approach that includes input from construction experts into engineering and design to identify and solve potential constructability issues early in the process, before they cause negative impacts to cost and schedule. Taking this a step further, fully integrated contracting methods, such as engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) and construction manager-at-risk (CMAR), establish an integrated team at project inception that carries through to commissioning and turnover. This allows for fully integrated schedules, transparent and clear communication across scopes of work and ultimately, cost and schedule certainty. Our experience operating through these innovative delivery methods goes back decades and has yielded a track record of successful project delivery even in the most challenging conditions.

Kiewit has performed a wide range of engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and maintenance and modifications work on nuclear facilities over the years and continues to expand its services in this evolving market.

1952

The United States Atomic Energy Commission awards Kiewit a $1.2 billion contract to build its Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Portsmouth, Ohio. It required over 20,000 craft workers and finished six months ahead of schedule, resulting in cost savings of $400 million.

1964

Kiewit begins work on the first of four major contracts at the Atomic Energy Commission’s Hanford nuclear production complex.

1970

Kiewit begins site work for Portland General Electric Company to prepare the area for Oregon’s first atomic power plant.

1973

Kiewit completes a 455 MW nuclear plant for Omaha Public Power District in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska.

1993

Kiewit builds thousands of linear feet of exploratory tunnel at Yucca Mountain in Nevada.

2008

Kiewit begins serving as an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) partner to deliver the next generation of reactors deployed across North America, supporting reliable, carbon-free energy goals.

2010

Kiewit forms Kiewit Power Nuclear, establishing an ASME Nuclear Quality Assurance (NQA-1) Program and associated nuclear certifications to pursue the emerging ‘nuclear renaissance’ new-build nuclear market.

2012

Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) awards Kiewit its first nuclear decommissioning project for the Humboldt Bay Nuclear Power Plant. Kiewit also constructs the Department of Energy’s Pantex High Explosive Pressing Facility and is awarded a maintenance and modifications contract on the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Plant in Nebraska.

2016

Tennessee Valley Authority awards Kiewit multiple nuclear facility projects from 2013 to 2016, including Fukushima Upgrades, Tritiated Water Storage Tank and Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant Maintenance Building inside the plant.

2020

In support of the Navy’s Spent Fuel Handling Recapitalization Project at Idaho National Laboratory, Kiewit installs approximately 17,000 tons of NQA-1 structural steel. This large new facility provides secure storage of spent fuel from the U.S. naval nuclear fleet of submarines and aircraft carriers.

2021

Kiewit begins construction on the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) Safety Significant Confinement Ventilation System Project, the largest containment fan system among DOE facilities. The system provides +/- 540,000 cfm of air to operations underground to help ensure the facility can safely continue its mission of transuranic waste disposal for decades.

2022

As the Y-12 National Security Complex Lithium Processing Facility constructability partner, Kiewit supports over 240 major process equipment procurements and improves project constructability as the construction manager at risk.

2023

Kiewit establishes Kiewit Nuclear Solutions to design and build Nuclear Security Enterprise infrastructure supporting national security and lead the next generation of reactors deployed across North America.

2024

Kiewit establishes SRNS presence with Task Order #1 support for the Savannah River Plutonium Processing Facility (SRPPF). Begins supporting the market’s first movers in commercial nuclear for enrichment, large reactor and small modular reactor.
