TECO Combined Heat and Power Plant

To meet the growing energy needs of the Texas Medical Center, Kiewit subsidiary, TIC, performed the piping and mechanical scopes for the 48-megawatt combined heat and power (CHP) plant.

Work included installation of a GE LM6000 combustion-turbine generator with selective-catalytic reduction, one heat-recovery steam generator with support systems and 19 tie-ins to existing plant utilities.

The new CHP plant allows the mission-critical facility to meet energy demands without tapping the electric grid. Electricity and waste heat from the plant are used to produce steam and chilled water, which is pumped through the district cooling and heating network. This then provides air conditioning, dehumidification, sterilization and space heating throughout the medical facility.
