As part of Xcel’s compliance with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission’s approved emissions reduction plan under the state’s Clean Air-Clean Jobs Act (CACJ), the utility will retire its coal-fired units at Cherokee Station located in Denver, Colo. Xcel Energy retired Unit 1 (107 MW) in May 2012 and Unit 2 (106 MW) in October 2011; Unit 3 (152 MW) will be retired in 2015, and Unit 4 (352 MW) will be converted to natural gas in 2017. The new Cherokee 569-megawatt 2x1 Combined Cycle Power Plant will provide replacement power at the Cherokee Site.
Kiewit was awarded the contract to engineer, procure and construct a nominal 300 MW 1x1 combined cycle plant and a nominal 200 MW 2x0 simple cycle plant to replace the existing steam boiler Unit 3, which will be decommissioned after the new units are in service. Equipment includes a GE 7FA.05 CTG, GE A14 STG, Vogt triple pressure HRSG, air-cooled condenser and two GE LMS 100 CTGs. The combined cycle plant will utilize the GE Rapid Response power train capability.
The Kiewit team engineered, procured and constructed the 800 MW natural gas-fired facility with four 200 MW Siemens 5000F(4) simple cycle units and selective catalytic reduction (SCR), oxidation catalysts, exhaust gas-tempering air fan systems and three fuel gas compressors.
Kiewit provided owner's engineering services to Duke Energy for their Hines Energy Complex. The scope included a technology and feasibility study and subsequent delivery of owner specifications for EPC delivery of a combustion turbine inlet chilling system.
Kiewit designed the automated water treatment chemical feed and replaced the existing manual chemical feed system with an automated system, including chemical feed tanks, pumps and instrumentation.
Kiewit teamed with the owner early in the Langley Gulch Power Plant development to create a baseline, self-build proposal that was evaluated against outside competitors. Kiewit worked closely with the owner to develop a cost-competitive project.
Kiewit was awarded the contract for engineering and procurement for the Napanee Generating Station in Napanee, Ontario. The 970 MW gas-fueled facility will provide reliable on-demand power to local homes, schools and businesses as well as replace existing coal-fired power in the providence.
Kiewit completed this design-build contract to engineer, procure, construct and commission the new 600 MW simple cycle power plant at Haynes Generating Station with six GE LMS100s. The project eliminated the use of ocean water for cooling.
Kiewit provided project development services, including: site plan drawings, heat balances, water balances, one line diagrams, and permitting support for a 200 MW simple cycle facility adjacent to a 1x1 450 MW combined cycle facility on the same site. The project aims to satisfy area demand for peaking power and variable load from renewable energy sources.
The Woodbridge Energy Center (WEC) is a 700-megawatt gas-fired power plant located on the site of an abandoned chemical plant. It will generate enough electricity to power more than 600,000 homes while increasing grid reliability. In an effort to stay eco-friendly, as well as cutting edge, the facility will use the most advanced generation technology today and, when complete, WEC will be one of the nation’s cleanest and most efficient generation stations.
