WCELS Impact

The Women in Construction and Engineering Leadership Seminar (WCELS) lives on through two students from Canada. Lindsey and Emma have taken their “Shark Tank” assignment from WCELS Canada and made it a reality. Earlier this year, Emma and Lindsey assembled a few outstanding women within Kiewit to create a video that will be used to encourage other young women to join our industry. These two ladies are a great example of the leadership skills WCLS hopes to shape in our future industry leaders. Check out their video here.

Faculty Development

BUILDING A STRONGER CURRICULUM WITH KIEWIT

Building a Stronger Curriculum with Kiewit (BSCK) is our annual faculty workshop that offers construction and engineering academic leaders the opportunity for professional development through engagement with Kiewit operations staff to build a curriculum relevant for today’s workforce.

Participants compare, discuss, and brainstorm new and exciting ways to enrich their classroom materials by utilizing the Kiewit diverse market and job function content.

Previous topics have included Estimating, Project Delivery & Risk, Constructability & Design, and Procurement of Engineered Equipment

BSCK 2020 was my first workshop with Kiewit and I found it EXCELLENT. Very well organized, engaging, and covering very interesting and relevant topics. The fact of being virtual did not affect the opportunity of networking, which for me, was also very enriching. I should not forget to mention the exceptional University Relations Team that makes available for faculty several options for collaboration during and after the event. Looking forward to the next BSCK!” – Maria Calahorra-Jimenez P.h.D., California State University, Fresno

The content presented was extremely powerful. I will use some of the information in my courses.” – Anonymous

Applications typically open in the spring and the workshop typically occurs in the summer. To receive information about the application process send your name, email, and university name to [email protected].

KIEWIT FACULTY SCHOLARS

Are you looking for hands-on operations or design experience to enrich your construction and engineering classrooms? Kiewit’s Faculty Scholars program gives you the opportunity to gain industry experience by working at Kiewit.

Each educator will spend their scholar period (typically 10-12 summer weeks or duration of their sabbatical) on a construction site or within a Kiewit office working in a design or operations support function.

Work assignments are based on the alignment of the Faculty Scholar’s goals and Kiewit district needs. With support from academic leadership, faculty identify skills, knowledge, and abilities they wish to gain. These goals are based on the needed professional work experience.

“I was able to share new, creative ideas about how we delivered the project, and how we managed quality, risk, safety and scheduling.” – Previous scholar

If you’re interested in becoming a faculty scholar you can submit an interest form here. To learn more about the Kiewit Faculty Scholars program and guidelines, please click here.
