What is UV Disinfection?

UV disinfection is a chemical-free, highly effective solution that neutralizes harmful microorganisms without producing toxic byproducts. It operates quickly, requires minimal contact time and is effective against chlorine-resistant pathogens like Cryptosporidium and Giardia making it a vital component in modern water treatment strategies. It can be used for treating both drinking water and wastewater. For wastewater, it eliminates the discharge of chlorine into the environment and supports land application reuse.

What Should You Consider?

For drinking water, UV disinfection doesn’t leave residual pathogen protection in treated water, so systems must be properly managed to prevent recontamination and provide residual chlorine for point-of-use protection. Water clarity also matters; turbidity and suspended particles can block UV light from reaching pathogens, so pretreatment processes should be part of any UV system.

Kiewit replaced an operational WTP with a new 75 MGD facility expandable to 150 MGD. It includes a new headworks facility with a hydro turbine, flocculation and sedimentation basins, anthracite media filtration with UV disinfection and more. By introducing UV into the treatment process, the need for a disinfection contact basin was eliminated and replaced by a buried, 120-inch diameter contact pipeline, which led to less overall concrete needed on the project.
