Structures and Bridges

Kiewit’s structural engineers specialize in the design of steel, prestressed and precast concrete girders, segmental and post-tensioned concrete and arch bridges. We bring a global perspective and construction-focused mindset to every project, offering constructability studies, final design plans, calculations and support for construction implementation. Our design concepts prioritize efficiency and constructability, factoring in site-specific conditions, local materials and equipment.

Transit and Rail

Kiewit’s transit and rail teams offer specialized expertise for rail and systems engineering, from track alignment geometry, railbed and substructure design to special trackwork. Systems engineering includes traction power, train control and signaling, communications and systemwide electrical design. We also excel at managing the integration of these systems with civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and architectural elements across the project.

 

Highway 5 Reinstatement Project

In less than two years, the team designed and constructed six new permanent bridge crossings – Juliet, Jessica, and Bottletop Bridges – under budget, ahead of target schedule and with strong inclusion of local and Indigenous businesses.

Foothill Gold Line

Kiewit, as part of the Kiewit-Parsons Joint Venture (KPJV), successfully expanded the A Line from Glendora to Pomona, adding 9.1 miles of new double-track light rail, four stations, 19 new and renovated bridges and 21 at-grade crossings.

South Central Light Rail Extension

The 5.5-mile South Central Extension/Downtown Hub connects downtown Phoenix’s light rail to historic neighborhoods along Central Avenue to Baseline Road. The extension features both single and double-track alignment and includes several key upgrades, including an overhead catenary system, 12 new stations and two park-and-rides.

Northwest Extension Phase II Light Rail Extension

Through early collaboration with Valley Metro and partners, the Kiewit-McCarthy joint venture brought unique innovations to the table — including $60 million in savings and 141 value engineering concepts — to deliver this 1.6-mile extension of Valley Metro’s light rail system in Phoenix ahead of schedule and under budget.

I-15 Tropicana Interchange

To support increasing demand on the Las Vegas Strip, Kiewit rebuilt a key interchange to meet future traffic needs and accommodate major events like Super Bowl LVIII. By leveraging integrated engineering, in-house resources and around-the-clock operations, Kiewit delivered under pressure — all while maintaining live traffic in one of the most visited corridors in North America.
