Planning & Scoping
Our experienced engineers provide comprehensive recommendations based on your system, local terrain, risk level and scoping criteria to deliver realistic options with a focus on prioritizing areas of highest risk.
More than ever, the threats posed by wildfires to our communities and property impact the choices we make across the power delivery industry. We understand the challenges utilities face — balancing customer satisfaction while mitigating risk and loss. Effective planning and proactive mitigation efforts minimize risk to public safety and electric infrastructure assets by improving service reliability for customers and decreasing the frequency of costly system outages and power shutoff events.
At Kiewit, our approach begins with a conversation, working with utilities of all sizes to understand our clients’ concerns and maintenance needs before delivering focused solutions that align with planned budgets and other system priorities.
Kiewit delivers end-to-end support, from planning and budgeting to construction and commissioning, through integrated teams that simplify coordination and ensure project success. Our holistic approach considers every aspect of the project, including design feasibility, constructability, safety, schedule and cost, even beyond our direct scope.
Our experienced engineers provide comprehensive recommendations based on your system, local terrain, risk level and scoping criteria to deliver realistic options with a focus on prioritizing areas of highest risk.
Our engineering and design team specializes in transmission and distribution design, SCADA and automation, overhead-to-underground distribution and transmission line conversion, including trench and conduit, cable and connection, cable pole and overhead service removal. As a stand-alone service, or in coordination with our construction team, we bring forward constructible designs that promote safety in the field and system longevity.
Environmental permitting poses challenges for upgrading and maintaining networks that cross through federal land and national forests. Kiewit works with local, state and federal permitting agencies to expedite the permitting process and avoid costly delays that can impact construction.
Our full-service construction teams perform a variety of services for system hardening across both distribution and transmission voltages, including line and pole replacement, rough terrain line replacement, voltage conversions, undergrounding and installation of covered conductor and other hardware, such as extended phase spacing and fire-rated insulators.
Selected as a strategic technical advisor, Kiewit worked with San Diego Gas & Electric to underground over 100 miles of overhead line in high-risk fire zones through county jurisdictions, tribal lands and the Cleveland National Forest. Performed under a project management organization (PMO) contract, Kiewit provided scoping services, technical reviews and analysis, project management and coordination, permitting support, cost estimates and analysis and technical expertise on multiple projects and circuits.
