A Trusted Partner for Nuclear Security Infrastructure

Our team is purpose-built to support U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) strategic initiatives, drawing on our experience delivering the nation’s most critical infrastructure. We continue to help drive this mission through engineering and construction projects that support spent fuel reprocessing, long-term waste storage projects, naval propulsion and advanced reactor demonstration projects.

Backed by more than 140 years of construction experience and extensive engineering capabilities, we deliver integrated solutions across the entire project life cycle with precision and discipline. We bring a safety culture that aligns with DOE’s highest standards, a proven NQA-1 quality program and a rigorous approach to risk management fortified by self-perform construction, industry-leading project controls and technology and supply chain resilience that meets the demand for cost and schedule certainty.

Early Engagement and Customized Project Delivery

Early engagement with Kiewit brings the full strength of our construction expertise to every stage of project development. By integrating decades of hands-on experience, proven field lessons and reliable historical cost data, we help ensure that designs translate seamlessly into safe, efficient and executable work packages.

This approach leads to well-coordinated project execution that includes a right-sized construction strategy, real-time estimating, constructability reviews and strategic work sequencing. For projects with long-lead equipment procurement or commercial grade dedication (CGD) requirements, our in-house procurement specialists can get a head start to help avoid delays to critical path activities. Whether through early contractor involvement (ECI), engineering, procurement and construction (EPC), construction manager at risk (CMAR) or progressive design-build delivery, we deliver smart solutions that move projects forward with confidence.

Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) Safety Significant Confinement Ventilation System Project

Kiewit constructed the largest containment fan system among DOE facilities, a modern air supply system that is designed to run continuously in unfiltered or high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration mode, necessitating NQA-1 and CGD requirements. The system provides +/- 540,000 cubic feet per minute of air to operations underground and will help ensure the WIPP facility can safely continue its mission of transuranic waste disposal.

Y-12 National Security Complex Lithium Processing Facility CMAR

As a lithium processing facility constructability partner, Kiewit teams are embedded with the client and the engineer of record to support over 240 major process equipment procurements and improve project constructability, where we have identified over $300 million in cost savings to date. In this CMAR model, Kiewit becomes a key stakeholder during early project development with the commitment to deliver cost and schedule certainty for this capital line-item project.

Savannah River Plutonium Processing Facility

As part of Task Order No. 1 for the Savannah River Plutonium Processing Facility (SRPPF), Kiewit is designing and developing a new borrow pit and heavy haul road to prepare four sites within the SRPPF footprint for buildings and structures. The project also includes removing existing utilities and installing new utilities to support the buildings and structures.
