Last month, historic flooding and landslides caused extensive damage in British Columbia. Many highways connecting Metro Vancouver to the Interior suffered significant damage.
On Dec. 20, Coquihalla Highway reopened to commercial traffic and inter-city buses, thanks in part to the hard work of Kiewit crews.
“We are incredibly proud of the effort of our people. Over 300 staff and craft, 110 pieces of heavy equipment and 80 subcontractors worked around the clock for five weeks to make this happen,” said Senior Vice President of Peter Kiewit Sons ULC Ryan Tones.
In a news conference last week, B.C. Transportation Minister Rob Fleming called the reopening, “one of the most remarkable engineering feats in recent memory in the province of British Columbia.”
In the immediate aftermath of the flooding, Kiewit personnel on the Trans Mountain Spread 5B project assisted local communities by helicoptering in essential supplies like food, water and blankets.
