Mine Reclamation Capabilities
Kiewit’s comprehensive mine reclamation services are backed by decades of proven performance. At our Buckskin Coal Mine in Wyoming, we’ve reclaimed more than 1,800 acres, including over 1,300 acres with full Phase 3 bond release, while actively operating one of the region’s largest surface mines.
Our expertise extends to large-scale reclamation projects at formerly owned sites, including 5,300 acres at Black Butte Mine and 1,544 acres at Big Horn Coal. From final grading and facility demolition to re-establishing native vegetation and achieving regulatory release, Kiewit delivers efficient, compliant, and sustainable mine closure solutions.
Mine Reclamation at Buckskin Mine
Over the course of our ownership of Buckskin Mine, more than 1,800 acres of land has been reclaimed, restoring the land to a natural or economically usable state.

Contract Surface Gold Mine
Kiewit Mining Group was selected to complete mine site development construction and perform contract gold mining services in eastern Alaska. It is a greenfield development project on Native Alaskan land that will provide hundreds of jobs for the local communities, while ensuring the highest environmental safeguards are upheld in some of the most challenging climate conditions in the United States. It utilizes a CAT 6030 front shovel that is loading 100-ton haul trucks to mine both ore and waste on a 24/7 basis.

Colowyo Mine Reclamation
Kiewit is executing a full-scale reclamation of a surface mine, including final bond release for our client. The project spans approximately 14 years and covers nearly 4,000 acres of land. Our team is moving over 40 million cubic yards of regrade and topsoil, including demolition of all existing infrastructure and facilities to restore the site to its natural state.

Buckskin Coal Mine
Owned and operated by Kiewit Mining Group, Buckskin Mine has produced over 500 million tons of sub-bituminous coal since 1981. Located in the Southern Powder River Basin, it ranks among the top U.S. coal producers with an annual capacity exceeding 25 million tons. Operations use ultra-class equipment, including two P&H 4100 XPCs, 12 CAT 797s and other P&H shovels and electric drive trucks. Efficiency is enhanced through CAT’s MineStar Fleet Management System and Immersive Technologies simulators.

Itafos Phosphate Mine
Kiewit is performing contract mining services to mine and deliver phosphate ore for the Conda Phosphate Operation, which operation ships over 2 million tons of high-quality phosphate ore by rail to be processed into concentrated phosphate-based fertilizers.

Treasure Talc Mine
Removal of over 4 million yards of waste material at the Treasure Mine for the client to access talc ore to support their business operations. Activities include water control, drill and blast operations and waste removal with 100-ton haul trucks and PC2000 excavators.

Raglan Mines
The Kiewit-Nuvumiut join venture began work at Raglan in 1995. Kiewit-Nuvumiut’s work includes open-pit mining, ore transport, quarrying and aggregate crushing for roads and pads at the nickel sulphide deposit. With a fleet of 200+ machines, K/N was able to move around 2 million MT of material and crush 300,000 MT annually.
