Anchorage Sport Fish Hatchery - Anchorage, Alaska
Built for the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, the 134,000-square-foot Anchorage Sport Fish Hatchery is the largest enclosed sport fish hatchery in North America. The hatchery raises more species of cold water fish in recirculating aquaculture systems than any other sport fish production facility in the U.S. King and silver salmon, rainbow trout, arctic char, lake trout and arctic grayling are raised in the hatchery and are then stocked into rivers and lakes throughout the south central region of Alaska.
This improved aquaculture technology reduces the volume of freshwater required to raise the same quantity of fish and the energy required to heat water to an optimum fish-rearing temperature. It also reduces the amount of effluent water discharged from the hatchery.
