River Mountain Water Treatment Plant - Henderson, Nev.
With one of the largest capital improvement programs in the United States, the Southern Nevada Water Authority chose Lake Mead Constructors, an internal joint venture led by Kiewit Pacific Co., a subsidiary of Kiewit Corporation, to construct this $146 million 150-mgd water treatment plant. Twenty months into the project, the owner decided to expand the scope of construction to include an additional $31 million 150-mgd phase. Connected to a 108-in.-dia. intake structure, the facility includes ozone treatment and filtration facilities, and associated support facilities for chemicals storage and power supply.
Subjected to high visibility from surrounding residents, several aesthetic applications were required, including exposed concrete walls and shaded masonry block. Satisfying the need for the highest quality concrete, crews established an on-site concrete batch plant. This reduced the impact of truck traffic on the community and allowed crews to control the concrete batching process.
Expanding the scope of work without extending the contract completion date is testimony to Kiewit's innovation and flexibility. Our ability to add resources and accelerate the schedule allowed the owner to save an estimated $5 million in remobilization, disruption, and rework costs.
