Sky Harbor International Airport Taxiway D and E - Phoenix, Ariz.
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is the Phoenix Metropolitan area's only commercial airport serving 23 major air carriers. The city of Phoenix and Sky Harbor International Airport awarded Kiewit the project for the partial reconstruction of Sky Harbor's Taxiway Delta and complete reconstruction to Taxiway Echo.
The project scope included milling the existing asphalt concrete taxiway and replacing it with Portland cement concrete pavement, which was provided by an on-site batch plant. The team demolished and constructed the underground drainage systems and the asphalt paving taxiway infields and transitions. In addition, crews installed new airfield electrical. Additional work included applying a fog seal coat for the west cargo apron.
Close coordination with air operations was critical to allow for continuous airline movement at all times. During the 1,030 construction days, project personnel worked more than 220,000 hours without any recordable incidents.
