School of Fisheries and Ocean Science Facility at Lena Point - Juneau, Alaska
Kiewit has been building facilities for the University of Alaska - Fairbanks (UAF) for more than 40 years. The School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences Facility (SFOS) at Lena Point is an $18 million, three-story, 30,000-square-foot educational research facility provides needed classrooms, laboratories, and faculty and student offices for the university in remote southeast Alaska near Juneau.
This project involved the integration of several challenging mechanical and electrical components. The teaching laboratories were uniquely designed as analytical laboratories and also included sea water laboratories, all with electrical and telecommunication requirements. The project included a hazardous storage building, duct banks for connection to a nearby National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) facility and an emergency generator.
