University of Maryland, College Park NextGen Energy Program

Kiewit Power Constructors Co. is preparing to respond to the Request for Proposals issued by the University of Maryland Department of Procurement & Strategic Sourcing to provide Design-Build Services to deliver the NextGen Energy Program.

Program Overview

The NextGen Energy Program (NextGen) was designed to replace, renew, and modernize the University of Maryland, College Park’s aging energy system to provide a reliable and resilient energy system that will support the College Park Campus ongoing energy needs.  Improvements to the energy system will include:

  • Updating the distribution system to make heating/cooling campus buildings more efficient
  • Implementing measures to increase efficiency and resiliency
  • Making modifications to incorporate new renewable energy sources and technology

NextGen Capital Improvements will be completed in two phases:

Phase 1 of the program will focus on modernizing the aging energy infrastructure and includes development of a strategy to achieve Decarbonization by 2035 (Phase 2). Key components of Phase 1 will include work at:

CENTRAL ENERGY PLANT

  • Demolition and replacement of the Combustion Turbines, Heat Recovery Steam Generators, Auxiliary Boilers, and support equipment
  • Demolition and replacement of Electrical Switch Gear
  • Remodeling of Control Rooms, Office Space, Locker Rooms, and Restrooms. Bringing the exterior of the building into a state of good repair
  • Installation of a State-of-the-Art Control System

STEAM DISTRIBUTION PIPING:

  • Removal and replacement of Direct Buried Steam and Condensate Piping (including Manhole repairs and replacement

DISTRIBUTED THERMAL PLANT – 4:

  • Demolition and replacement of all Chilled Water Units and Auxiliary Equipment within each University of Maryland building connected to the DTP-4 system including Cooling Towers, Pumps and electrical equipment

Kiewit Power Constructors Co. is the Lead Contractor for Maryland Energy Impact Partners (MEIP) that includes Equity Members, Plenary Americas US Holdings Inc. (Plenary) and Kiewit Development Company (KDC). MEIP is also supported by Lead Engineer for the design of the distribution system, Ramboll Americas Engineering Solutions, Inc. (Ramboll), and Lead Operator, Honeywell.

BUSINESS INCLUSION

KIEWIT IS CURRENTLY SOLICITING BIDS FROM FIRMS INTERESTED IN SUBCONTRACT/SUPPLY OPPORTUNITIES ON THE PROJECT

Multiple bid packages will be released throughout October with final packages tentatively scheduled for release October 17th. Bid responses are due to KPC 10 business days after solicitation notice issue. Please refer to specific bid due dates for each package you receive. We encourage interested firms to complete the following:

  1. Complete our Subcontractor Questionnaire to help is understand your capabilities and bidding interest for this project.
  • Please indicate the scope(s) of work you are interested in bidding
  1. After completing the Subcontractor Questionnaire indicating your scope interest, you will be required to complete and return a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) to the KPC estimating team
  2. After returning signed NDA to the KPC estimating team, you will receive bid package documents for the scope(s) of work you are interested in as they become available.
