Kearl Oil Sands River Water Intake Project

Kearl Oil Sands River Water Intake Project - Fort McMurray, AB

In May 2009, Kiewit was awarded the contract to excavate and construct the river water intake (RWI), for the larger Kearl Oil Sands project. Located nearly 40 kilometers from the plant site, and adjacent to the Athabasca River, this project provided Kiewit with a number of significant challenges.

The RWI site required more than 800,000 cubic meters of common excavation at depths of up to 20 meters before the team could construct the intake structure. Both the excavation and intake construction were critical elements of the overall Kearl Oil Sands project. The intake site grading was completed by mid-July to allow the team to install a 30-foot-diameter sheet pile cofferdam inside the prescribed Department of Fisheries and Oceans prescribed work window.

The client accelerated the schedule to construct the RWI in one year, requiring an intricate level of planning and organization on behalf of the Kiewit team.
