The Agrium Phosphate Mine is located near Soda Springs, Idaho. Kiewit Mining Group is providing contract mining services to provide 2.0 to 2.3 million tons of phosphate ore per year. The final ore is loaded into railcars for final delivery to the Conda Phosphate Plant.
Located near Sheridan, Wyoming Big Horn Coal Company became the first “surface coal mine” in the nation back in 1944. It mined more than 47 million tons of coal and moved more than 182 million cubic yards of overburden in its mine life. In fall 2000, Big Horn Coal finished backfilling, grading and top-soiling all pit areas ending its 57 years of mining.
Buckskin Mining Company is located 10 miles north of Gillette, Wyoming within the Southern Powder River Basin. The mine has a current capacity of 25 million tons per year and delivers its coal to numerous customers throughout the United States.
Lac de Gras Constructors, a Kiewit-led joint venture, completed three contracts from January 2000 to March 2003 to construct portions of this diamond mine south of the Arctic Circle. A major feature of the project was the 3.9-km. water retention dike that encircles the diamond deposits – the first dike of its kind constructed in Canada.
Construction Kiewit Cie was awarded the first of four contracts to perform infrastructure work at the Raglan nickel mine in the Canadian Arctic. The owner's satisfaction with these early contracts was a key factor in selecting a Kiewit-led team to provide seven years of open-pit mining.
The 11 pits that made up Rosebud Coal Sales Company yielded 32 million tons of coal during its 40-year history. As reclamation efforts evolved, many innovative techniques were developed to complete reclamation of 4,000 acres. As a result, Kiewit has helped shape the current industry and state standards and guidelines for post-mining reclamation.
