From early 1993 to 2002, Mass. Electric Construction Co. (MEC), a subsidiary of Kiewit Corporation, was awarded four contracts totaling over $64 million for the DART Light Rail Starter System and the North Central and North Eastern extensions. The main scope of work involved constructing the train control, central control and communications systems.
The projects consisted of installing and testing an automatic block signal system for over 44 mi. of double track. System elements included automatic highway crossing warnings, train stops, and train-to-wayside communications.
MEC was responsible for the complete design, supply, installation and testing of the light rail transit communications and supervisory control system. Major subsystem elements included the central control computer network, fiber optic communications transmission, fire and intrusion detection, radio, SCADA and telephones.
