On the beautiful west side of Maui, the Lahaina Gateway, a 144,000-square-foot lifestyle center, is one of the newest improvements to the island. Kiewit Building Group Inc., a subsidiary of Kiewit Corporation, constructed the Lahaina Gateway project. Now, the gateway is home to several retailers and restaurants along the Honoapiilani Highway.
When designing the shell for Lahaina Gateway, the clients wanted to replicate the façade of the historical “Front Street” storefronts. Today, this lifestyle center is made up of various styles of buildings, ranging from historic, plantation style to a modern style with Stucco finishes.
Site work for the project included clearing and grubbing the 11-acre lot. The team placed 42,000 cubic yards of select imported base material, installed a storm drain system, sewer system, site utilities, parking lot curbs and paving, landscaping, site lighting and plaza areas. The shell structure consists of spread footings, slab on grade, concrete tilt-up panels for three of the five buildings and a combination of masonry, metal-stud framing and structural steel for the other two structures.
