Creighton University Hixson - Lied Science Center - Omaha, NE

The Hixson-Lied Science Center is part of Creighton's 450,000-square-foot Integrated Science Complex that links Creighton's Rigge Science, Criss I and Criss II buildings. The center, built by Kiewit Building Group Inc., a subsidiary of Kiewit Corporation, has faculty and staff offices as well as classrooms.

Intended to be Creighton University's main entrance or “front door” on the north side of campus, the center’s six-story glass and steel atrium at the main entrance. The 150,000-square-foot center provides swing space for departments during the phased renovation. The facilities house the schools of medicine, pharmacy and nursing as well as the undergraduate departments of chemistry, biology, physics, environmental science and atmospheric Science.

Faced with the challenge of constructing a new addition and connecting it to two existing science buildings while providing minimal disruption to the classrooms and research labs, the team created and maintained a highly detailed construction schedule with all tasks itemized. The sequence and duration of each individual task were reviewed and further defined through constant coordination with each subcontracted trade. Each element of the construction process was then assessed and reviewed with Creighton's facility staff to develop a task approach that would leave adjacent facilities fully functional. The construction was faster, more cost-effective with virtually no disruption in adjacent spaces.
