Kiewit Pacific Co., a subsidiary of Kiewit Corporation, began construction of this multi-contract, $12.5 million master-planned community in September 2001. Completed in December 2003, the mass grading project consisted of excavation, hauling and embankment of 2.4 million cu. yd. of material for 870 house sites and several commercial sites.
Kiewit Corporation was also selected for a third $4 million follow-on contract to install underground utilities including water, storm drainage and sewer systems. The scope of the project included placement of road base, construction of concrete sidewalks and street surfacing. Local site conditions created challenges, which included a hard lava cap, called merhten, and a cemented cobble conglomerate material.
