Thorough planning and organization of the 250-MW Santa Rosa Energy Center by Gilbert Southern Corp., a subsidiary of Kiewit Corporation, resulted in crews beating three project milestones on this fast track project – provisional acceptance one month early, substantial completion nearly two months early and final completion six months early.

Designed by Kiewit Power Engineers Co., another Kiewit Corporation subsidiary, the plant produces both electrical and steam energy. Components to plant operations include a 168.5-MW combustion turbine generator; non-reheat 74.5-MW steam turbine generator; three-pressure heat recovery steam generator; two generator step-up transformers; 230-k VA switchyard; 4,000-sq.-ft. water treatment building; 4,000-sq.-ft. chemical treatment building; and a 30,000-sq.ft. administration building and control room.

Major project quantities included more than 5,000 cu. yd. of structural concrete; 850 tons of structural steel; approximately 36,000 ft. of above ground piping; more than 5,000 ft. of underground piping; nearly 28,000 ft. of above ground conduit; more than 24,000 ft. of underground electrical duct; more than 80,000 ft. of low voltage cable; more than 10,000 ft. of medium voltage cable; and 450 ft. of high voltage bus duct.
