This $10.7 million site grading and pile driving contract was completed in July 2001 by Kiewit Pacific Co., a subsidiary of Kiewit Corporation. The Los Medanos Energy Center is a 500-megawatt combined-cycle cogeneration power plant owned and operated by Calpine. The 12-acre plant site required 24,000 cu. yd. of site grading and installation of 1331 14-in. concrete piles, ranging from 45-ft. to 55-ft. long, to support structural foundations. Crews also placed over 10,000 cu. yd. of structural concrete.
Following the site and foundation work, Kiewit Power Constructors Co. and Kiewit Power Engineers Co., subsidiaries of Kiewit Corporation, provided engineering, procurement and construction for the complete facility. The new plant consists of a combustion turbine generator, heat recovery steam generator system, steam turbine generator, step-up transformer, cooling towers, water storage tanks, water treatment facility, administration building, fuel metering station, and gas compressor building. The scope of work also included startup and commissioning assistance, as well as civil, structural, building and architectural services.
