The Berth 302-305 Container Wharf is the largest wharf project ever undertaken by the Port of Los Angeles. The more than 4,000-ft.-long wharf can accommodate four container ships. Kiewit Pacific Co., a subsidiary of Kiewit Corporation performed more than 800,000 cu. yd. of dredge excavation to create a 50-ft. water depth at the wharf's face. Crews removed 210,000 tons of rock, which was processed into construction aggregate, and imported 500,000 tons of rock for slope protection.
The completed wharf features full-length crane rails, a railroad service track, embedded utility services, a fender system and an asphalt concrete overlay. In addition, the contract required a 4,000-ft. extension to an existing 72-ft. ocean sewage outfall. The project received a 1997 Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Award from the Associated General Contractors of America.
