GSC Atlanta, Inc. a subsidiary of Kiewit Southern Co. removed and repoured Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport's 10,000-ft.-long, 150-ft.-wide Runway 8R-26L within a 60-day timeline for opening the runway to full-scale operations.

Identified in a pavement evaluation as the most distressed runway on the airfield, the project included removal of more than three miles of concrete on the existing runway; installation of underdrains, base materials and electrical lighting; and repaving the runway with 20 inch thick Portland cement concrete paving. By mid–October, the 8R runway was complete.

Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport is one of the world's busiest airports handling nearly 1 million take–offs and landings annually. Just two weeks after project completion, more than 1.7 million passengers traveled through the airport during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Runway 8R closed the day after Labor Day with crews working 24/7 to place an average of 3,650 cubic yards of concrete per day. The on–site batch plant produced over 180,000 cubic yards of concrete in 45 days for the runway alone. Two crossing locations along 8R were required to remain open at all times allowing vehicle and plane traffic. The crossings could be shut down for a maximum of eight days during their replacement. On November 6, after completing the final phase of building the new taxiway, Delta flight 1211 landed at 7:02 a.m. signifying all work was complete.
