In May 2001, a Kiewit-led joint venture was awarded this $1.2 billion design-build project. Completed in fall 2006, project personnel reconstructed 17 miles of two interstate highways while simultaneously adding 19 miles of new double-track light rail transit (LRT) line and 13 new stations.
For safety and reliability, the expanded LRT is completely separate from the highway, and was designed to accommodate increased ridership access as well as preparing for future expansion to surrounding areas such as Denver’s International Airport. The 13 newly constructed light rail stations are accessible through a bus feeder system, pedestrian bridges and underpasses. The trackwork consists of 188,000 feet of new concrete tie track and new continuously welded rail. Crews also added 9,600 feet of direct fixation track including special trackwork, restraining rail, guard rail and expansion joints. Additional work included 55 new ballasted turnouts and crossovers, and hauling and placing 270,000 tons of ballast.
The T-REX Project increases transit options, enhances safety, replaces aging infrastructure and significantly reduces travel time. In addition to Kiewit meeting and exceeding all the project goals, the T-REX project received a Colorado Performance Excellence Award for its project management, audit program, project controls, public information program and partnering efforts.
