Jobs Done Well
The Estimating Services of Kiewit Engineering Co (KECo) typically confront technically challenging work with tough schedules in unfamiliar areas. Estimating Services provides prime estimates for the operating districts of Kiewit as well as Kiewit-sponsored and non-sponsored joint ventures. Estimating Services’ foremost purpose, however, is performing second estimates as part of a thorough evaluation and risk analysis of a project’s materials, equipment and manpower needs. Second estimates provide an independent estimate of the same project a Kiewit district is bidding. This provides a second look that enables different solutions to the work. The district operation and KECo start with the same owner requirements but may differ in how the job should be built. This concept is not focused on the lowest cost, but on the right cost.
Hood Canal Bridge – Port Gamble, WA
The Hood Canal Bridge is the main economic transportation link between the Puget Sound and the Olympic Peninsula. This unique project called for the construction of new floating concrete pontoon sections as well as new bridge sections. The floating pontoons are being constructed in a sheet pile graving dock. A total of 50,000 cu. yd. of structural concrete will be placed on this job when complete. A temporary work trestle will be constructed on the south side of the canal to facilitate the removal and replacement of the structural steel approach span. KECo provided the graving dock and marine work estimates.
Oakland Bay Bridge Skyway Segment – Oakland, CA
This twin 87-ft.-wide by 6000-ft.-long precast balanced segmental structure is the centerpiece of the Bay area bridges. KECo performed a complete second estimate on the $1.2 billion project. Along with the balanced cantilever superstructure, KECo estimated the 32 pile footings, columns and the integral pier tables. KECo also estimated the setup of the precast yard and precasting of the up to 800-ton segments. To erect these segments, KECo performed an estimate on the assembly of the erection sled and the erections of the segments from the Bay.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Taxiways F & L – Atlanta, GA
Estimating Services provided a second estimate for this $25 million taxiway replacement at the world’s busiest airport. Major material quantities included removing and replacing 100,000 sq. yd. of 22-in. concrete pavement, batching 67,000 cu. yd. of concrete and placing 10,000 ft. of underdrain. In addition to performing a complete estimate on this fast-paced project, KECo provided a complete schedule for the 110-day contract.
CTA Red Line – Chicago, IL
KECo completed a second estimate on this $197 million contract in Chicago. KECo did two complete estimates on this project and provided cost and scheduling services. The Redline is located in the median of the Dan Ryan Expressway. The work consisted of complete track removal and replacement, ballast removal and replacement, and a new underdrain system. Rebuilding and modernizing the stations were part of the contract. KECo also estimated support of excavation, dewatering and mass excavation.
