Markets Experience

The Northwest District specializes in construction projects as diverse as the geographical area it covers. Pursuing heavy civil and highway construction work, the district prides itself on delivering quality projects on-time or ahead of schedule.

Tacoma Narrows Bridge
The $615 million Tacoma Narrows Bridge is the first long-span suspension bridge to be constructed in the United States since 1964. Completed in July 2007, the new 5,413-ft.-long bridge will include a high occupancy vehicle traffic lane, a separated bicycle/pedestrian walkway, an 8,000-sq.-ft. toll plaza building, and configurations for a future secondary roadway or transit deck.
Glenn-Parks Interchange
The renovated Glenn-Parks Interchange provides safer road conditions and less congestion for a growing number of commuters. The $46.9 million design-build contract was completed in November 2004 and included unique wetlands conservation and restoration measures to protect Alaska's delicate ecosystem.
I-25 T-REX Project
The $1.28 billion T-REX Project is the largest transportation contract in Colorado history. Designed and built by a Kiewit-led joint venture, the project included improvements to I-25 and I-225 and construction of transit lines. Additional work involved reconstruction of interchanges and bridges, a new drainage system and improved pedestrian and bicycle access.
Whittier Access Tunnel
In 1998, Kiewit Construction Company began work on the $60 million Whittier Access Tunnel, Alaska's first design-build transportation project. The Design-Build Institute of America awarded the project its 2001 Design-Build Excellence award for the best civil project over $15 million.
The Big I
Nearly 2 mi. of I-25 and I-40 Interchange was reconstructed and expanded under this $221 million contract. As part of the project, fifty-five bridges were built including eight new precast segmental fly-over bridges, 33 new concrete girder bridges, four structural steel girder bridges, and 10 were rehabilitated.
San Joaquin Hills Transportation Corridor
A Kiewit-led joint venture was selected to construct this new 19-mi., six-lane toll road. The work included 80 bridges, 725,000 sq. ft. of retaining wall, 32 million cu. yd. of excavation and 11 interchanges. Despite an 18-month environmental delay, the design-build project team opened the road to traffic ahead of schedule.
