Jobs Done Well
The Design Services of Kiewit Engineering Co (KECo) are primarily concerned with the analysis and design of temporary structures. Design Services’ focus is on delivering structural falsework plans, excavation support, cofferdams, special concrete forming systems, maritime structures and steel erection devices. Design Services supports varied applications, including temporary bridge structures (pier caps, bridge overhangs, foundations, girder erection), building support (concrete slab support, foundations) and earthwork (trench excavations, shafts, cut-and-cover tunnels) as well as cofferdams and water restraint systems. Design Services supplies the engineering services to support field operations providing both original designs and peer reviews of structural designs and calculations, construction drawings and field inspections. Design Services covers all stages of the construction process, from bid to execution, and its senior engineers provide consultation for concept development on high-risk and unusual operations.
For this cast-in-place segmented concrete bridge, Design Services provided designs of temporary structures and special equipment including falsework, formwork, support of excavation, a 2,300-ton catamaran barge, trestles, heavy lift support, pile driving templates and platforms, form travelers and tower crane foundations. Peer reviews for the Benicia-Martinez Bridge included all falsework designs, lifting components, trestles, formwork, segmental form travelers, marine operations, and heavy lift and lowering systems.
Concrete work for the new Arizona Cardinals Stadium featured four 170-foot-tall supercolumns as part of a hoisting system for the stadium roof as well as stadium seating, slabs on grade and a unique rollout field slab that retracts along rails. KECo provided design of the auxiliary table form system, peer review, on-site engineering support of falsework and special forming systems.
For Omaha's Performing Arts Center, KECo provided designs and peer reviews of tower crane foundations, support of excavation, formwork, falsework, heavy lift analysis, on-site support of engineering of complex geometrical grade calculations, and long truss stability reviews.
A monster road and light-rail project, T-REX involved construction of 61 roadway bridges, reconstruction of 17 miles of interstate highway, 19 miles of light rail transit line and 14 additional bridges, as well as tunneling, drainage and utility work. KECo assisted with designs and peer review of temporary structures, including falsework, formwork, support of excavation and cofferdams.
Stone Canyon Water Quality Improvement - Los Angeles, CA
This $67 million bypass tunnel involves taking a live reservoir that has been subject to water runoff out of service and constructing chlorination and filtration buildings. Design Services provided peer review and on-site supervision of support of excavation and falsework.
Extensive paving, retaining wall construction, and 11 bridges are featured as part of this Texas Department of Transportation project. KECo provided designs and peer reviews of temporary structures including falsework, formwork, support of excavation and girder erection.
