Employee Training and Development
In an effort to meet the learning needs and demands of its young and enthusiastic staff, Kiewit Energy Canada recently expanded its Training and Development Department. Kiewit Energy Canada employees have the opportunity to attend Corporate, District and “On the Job” training to improve the job they are doing today and to prepare for the job they will be doing tomorrow. Kiewit Energy Canada relies on a foundation of learning to follow through with its “Career Advancement” philosophy.
Opportunities
Opportunities for people in our Company are greater today than they have ever been in the past and they will increase in the years ahead.
- You do not have to change companies to change jobs!
- You will gain a breadth of experience in a variety of challenging roles.
We have resources and the experience to expand into all types of construction. The market for our services is unlimited. Our only limitation is in the number of proven people we have available. We will expand successfully only as fast as our people can develop.
Corporate Training – Kiewit University
Kiewit training has long been acknowledged as a leading industry standard. From a desire to follow Peter Kiewit’s motto to be “pleased but not satisfied,” Kiewit University (KU) in Omaha was born. KU formalizes and better organizes what is one of our strengths: the ability of Kiewit people from different parts of the continent to quickly become a team because of shared knowledge. The employee in Edmonton and the employee in Miami use the same terminology and have a common understanding of our approach to safety, quality, compliance, estimating, risk analysis, information technology system, and the many other tools and processes we use in our business. The sharing of lessons learned and best practices utilizes the collective intelligence of our staff. The phenomenon is often referred to as “Kiewit Culture” or simply, “The Kiewit Way.”
District Training and Development
The District curriculum is a platform for building upon the “The Kiewit Culture.” It allows us to more quickly incorporate lessons learned from our work, both positive and negative, and spread knowledge throughout the District. It allows us to offer specialized programs that complement our project’s ”On-the-Job” training programs.
2009 Annual District Meeting – 125 Year Celebration was held from January 21-23, 2009 in Austin, Texas. The District Meeting, held annually, is an opportunity for staff and spouses to come together to celebrate the previous year successes and to prepare for the upcoming year. It is also a tremendous staff training opportunity that highlights presentations and workshops of priority topics for the year ahead.
The key goal of the Kiewit Energy Canada employee training and development program is to develop and build the leadership team for the next 3-5 years to support the Kiewit Energy Canada business strategy. Two programs have been developed to support this goal:
-
The Kiewit Masters Program: Designed for engineers,, the program provides exposure to the full scope of a construction project and will prepare you for a career that can eventually lead to management opportunities such as:
- Project Engineer
- Field Superintendent
- Lead Estimator
Kiewit’s objective will provide maximum exposure to the many programs, positions and processes in order to develop well rounded supervisors and managers.
- The Leadership Program (LSP): At Kiewit Energy Canada, we are dedicated to developing our employees into future leaders in the Construction Industry.
“On-the-Job” Training & Work Experience
Learning by Doing is finding its place in on-the-job training programs throughout Kiewit Energy Canada projects. On-the-job training will enhance an individual’s work experience and lead towards more career development opportunities. Work Experience serves as the main ingredient towards developing leaders within Kiewit. The training and development staff will continually work with project managers and project staff to review Best Practices and Lessons Learned in order to balance the efficiency and effectiveness of training with project demands.
