 Kiewit Safe

Kiewit Energy Canada’s policy is to perform its work in the safest manner possible, consistent with good construction practices, and with regard to the safety, health and environmental (SHE) welfare of people, assets, production and the environment. Our safety policy is designed to meet or exceed the requirements of our clients and to comply with the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code and Regulations. In recognition of our safety program, Kiewit Energy Canada was selected for a Work Safe Alberta Best Safety Performer in 2006 and 2007 for exceptional performance in workplace health and safety.

Kiewit Energy Canada strongly believes that work performed safely yields the highest quality at the lowest cost. The essentials of Kiewit Energy Canada’s SHE and Security Programs are:

  • Commitment – to the philosophy that all incidents are preventable
  • Responsibility – to not tolerate unsafe conditions or unsafe acts
  • Authority – to immediately correct unsafe conditions and unsafe acts
  • Accountability – for everyone’s safety, health and environmental performance

Leadership is vital to the successful implementation of a high quality Safety Management System and the creation of a positive safety culture. Management strongly encourages and is engaged in the development of this safety culture. Responsibility for the Safety Program is shared with line supervision in accordance with the chain of command. Within our program, everyone has direct responsibility for health, safety and environmental protection as an essential part of their job. Everyone at Kiewit Energy Canada, no matter their title, is expected to take initiative on health, safety and environmental issues, and to work to solve problems and make continuous improvements in the workplace. Each person does this both as an individual and in co-operation with others, because they share joint responsibility for identifying and resolving health, safety and environmental issues.

To maintain the high standards of our program, training is a vital part of Kiewit Energy Canada’s safety system. Our frontline supervisors are trained in OH&S Codes and Regulations and in Excellence in Safety Leadership, and they participate in training modules implemented from a corporate level, company-wide.

A major part of safety on any project is employee awareness. An active, innovative safety incentive program not only brings attention to safety but also rewards employees for working safely. Safety incentives are not a stand-alone answer to a safe, incident-free workplace, but combined with other safety program elements, such as training, hazard analysis, and accountability, they can bring a positive safety attitude to the project. Kiewit Energy Canada has in place the Foreman/General Foreman Merit Program, On-the-Spot awards, and site-specific monthly and quarterly incentives.

At Kiewit Energy Canada, we “Never Walk Past an Unsafe Act.”
