Superintendent
“Through the 5 years I have worked for Kiewit, some of the highlights have been designing the Heavy Lift Plans for 500,000lb Vessels, flying in a manbasket 380’ in the air, and becoming a stockholder after 3 years. In my current position as a superintendent, I manage a crew of 30 ironworkers. This includes scheduling the work, monitoring progress, resolving any problems, ensuring material and tools are available, and keeping the safety of the workers at the top of our priorities. My favorite part of my current role is the satisfaction of seeing the work done on time, and with no one hurt.”—K.B.
Estimating
“I started with Kiewit in 2001 as a Field Engineering Intern. I then completed a second internship before joining Kiewit as a full time hire in May of 2003. So far, my career with Kiewit has been very rewarding and dynamic. I have worked on 5 different projects including Power Plants, SAGD’s, a Sulphur Recovery Plant and an offshore oil and gas FPSO. One thing I enjoy about Kiewit is that you don’t stay in the same position forever. If you have a desire to advance in your career Kiewit is the best company that promotes the development of people. Throughout my career I have held the positions of a Field Engineer, Lead Engineer, Lead EPC Coordinator, Superintendent and most recently was promoted to Estimating Manager for our district. In my new role I am responsible for organizing and leading estimates, training our team, and ultimately getting work at the right price. The highlight of my career with Kiewit is the people. I enjoy coming to work each day and working side by side with the industry’s most talented and dedicated personnel. It keeps me motivated to do my best with the need to succeed on every project.”—N.Q.
Quality
“I am as confident today as I was in March of 2008 that Kiewit is truly the land of opportunity. I joined Kiewit that day as an Area Quality Manager and have since moved to the role of District Quality & Compliance Manager with oversight over our Environmental department. In my nearly ten years of working in the oil sands business I am yet to experience a company or client that expresses such commitment of time, money and energy to the development of our most valuable resource…our people. My day consists of supporting our projects, interfacing with clientele and looking for ways to continuously improve our business. In my short time as a Kiewit employee, I have being granted the opportunity to weigh in on company improvements and programs beyond our district, at both the division and corporate levels. My Kiewit experience has proven to me that with hard work, ambition, and adequate talent, the sky is the limit. Our past success will provide justification of being such a proud company, and I am and will continue to be a proud employee.”—J.M.
Safety
“I started working for Kiewit in April 2007 as a Construction Safety Advisor in the Edmonton Module Yard. I discovered that their emphasis on safety and quality was not just a philosophy - it is actually seen and carried out by the workers on site. I learned that “Kiewit Safe” is not just the safety department’s responsibility, but is the responsibility of each individual on site. Since starting with Kiewit, I have progressed from an entry level safety advisor to heading up the Safety Department. Some of the tasks I perform in this role are conducting orientations, mass safety meetings, and site specific safety training. I am also responsible for ensuring that the Edmonton Module Yard is in compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Legislation. Furthermore I make myself available to our workers should they have any questions or concerns regarding safety. The one thing I enjoy most about my position is having the opportunity to work side by side with really great people. My personal career goals were complimented by Kiewit’s expectations for me, this has allowed for both myself and Kiewit to be successful.”
Let us not forget that “People are our Greatest Asset.”—B.A.
Procurement
“I joined Kiewit Energy in May of 2006 where I started as a Purchaser/Expeditor on SAGD Project with only one person reporting to me. It was a small project with only 150 staff & craft at its peak. Even though it was a small project, I found the people to be very friendly & helpful. Once Phase 1 ended, I stayed on as a Purchaser/Expeditor for Phase 2. After about 18 months, I was moved to the position of Procurement/Warehouse Manager for the duration of the Project. For me, this meant new challenges & much more responsibility. Some of these responsibilities included more people reporting to me and how I would manage them. The great thing about Kiewit is that they had the resources available to help me with these new challenges & responsibilities. At its peak we had 800 staff & craft and the site was much larger in size than Phase 1. Some of the things I found on this phase was that even though there were a lot more people, the people were friendly and there was a team atmosphere. Everyone on site was willing to help out & get the job done. I have just started on the another major oil sands project & even though it is a different Kiewit Division running the job, there is still a “team” atmosphere. That’s what makes this company great to work for.”—J.M.
Business Manager
“I started with Kiewit as a Jr. Business Manager in 2006. I have since been assigned to several different roles, such as accounts payable and payroll supervisor. Right from the start Kiewit impressed me with the way the company does business, “with the highest ethical standards and in full compliance with the law”. In only three years, I’ve progressed into a District Audit Manager’s role, where I’m responsible for internal audits and ensuring the company standards are being met. With the support of management and the training provided, I’ve experienced career growth beyond my expectations. I’ve experienced that, if you are committed to putting your best effort in and have the willingness to improve yourself, with the training and the experience Kiewit gives you, the opportunities with Kiewit are endless!”—N.K.
Administration
“I started with Kiewit Energy, as Travel and Housing Supervisor, two and a half years ago. Ensuring that up to 1,600 people, from all walks of life and locations all over the world, had a valid ticket to and from work and a place to stay when they got there was certainly a challenge. Learning the dynamics of managing the people in my department, setting policies and procedures as well as providing appropriate service levels to other departments was invaluable experience. I’ve recently moved from Travel and Housing to Assistant Business Manager where I’m learning the importance of proper vendor relations and the finer points of following procedures. Every day poses a new challenge, but I’ve been extensively trained and know I have Management’s support to move forward with whatever is thrown at me next. If you love hard work, the ability to improve yourself, excitement, travel and great people, Kiewit is the place for you. I am proud to be a member of the Kiewit family and all that it stands for.”—K.S.
