Stability. Reputation. Experience.
From its inception in the mid 1940s, the Denver District has been involved in numerous transportation projects throughout the district’s operating area, including continuing work on Colorado’s highly traveled I-25 and I-70 corridors.
The Denver District played a major role in the reconstruction of the Southeast Corridor through central Denver, known as the T-REX project. This is the largest transportation contract in Colorado history. The landmark project, was completed in the fall of 2006 by a Kiewit-led joint venture, includes improvements to 17 mi. of I-25 and I-225 and construction of 19 mi. of transit lines. Additional work involves reconstruction of interchanges and bridges, a new drainage system, and improved pedestrian and bicycle access.
The district has a long and proud history of projects through the Rocky Mountain area. Of particular historical significance are two Colorado projects: the second bore of the I-70 Eisenhower Tunnel and the construction of I-70 through Glenwood Canyon.
Known as the world’s highest auto tunnel, the 8,960-ft.-long Eisenhower Tunnel and its parallel bore are at an elevation of 11,000 ft. Started in 1976, the $103 million project was completed in three years. Today, more than one million vehicles pass through the tunnel every month, avoiding a 10 mi. trip over Loveland Pass.
Of equal significance is the $375 million I-70 project. One of several participants involved in this historic task, the Denver District constructed some of the most challenging and critical portions of the project. We were responsible for constructing .75 mi. of I-70 at Cinnamon Creek and a 1,500-ft.-long steel tub girder bridge. Honored with numerous awards for innovative construction and environmental sensitivity, the I-70 projects successfully preserved Glenwood Canyon’s natural beauty.
