The All-American Canal Lining Project Receives Prestigious Award
July 21, 2010
Kiewit’s Imperial Irrigation District’s All-American Canal Lining project has been named one of the Public Works Projects of the Year by the American Public Works Association.
The All-American Canal Lining project is located 20 miles west of Yuma, Arizona in the southeast corner of California. Kiewit constructed 12.4 miles of new concrete-lined canal through Glamis sand dunes to replace the existing unlined canal at the same elevation as the existing canal.
The public works projects of the year awards are presented annually to promote excellence in the management and administration of public works projects, according to the Imperial Valley Press Staff Report.
Completed ahead of schedule and on budget, the project was also awarded a Project of the Year Award in the environmental category, with cost greater than $75 million because of the partnerships between state and local water agencies to invest in California’s water supply.
Kiewit met extensive environmental requirements and promoted excellence to get the job done successfully. The project conserves and transfers 67,000 acre-feet of water per year for up to 110 years.
